“The King’s Radio: Music for the Royal Chambers” The 2018 Pacific Baroque Festival presents La Modestine, performing sumptuous French baroque music in celebration of the 350th birthday of François Couperin, the greatest of French baroque composers. The programme will include music by Couperin, Marin Marais and Jean-Marie Leclair. “If I had a choice, I would have wanted to be Debussy or Couperin. I listen and it is magic. I just can't understand how they conceived enchantment. I couldn't so I decided to be a mathematician, the next best thing.” ―Philippe Kahn La Modestine was formed in 2016 by four renowned musicians who discovered that playing together was one of their great joys. La Modestine's repertoire focusses on music of the baroque for one or two violins, viola da gamba and basso continuo. The Pacific Baroque Festival has been delighting audiences since 2005 with an annual festival in Victoria in February, highlighting one aspect of music from the baroque period, performed on period instruments. Since 2015 the Festival has expanded its activities to include a small ensemble performing related repertoire in select communities.
